Quick Excel: How to alphabetize and sort name in a few easy steps without mixing data
To alphabetize data in Microsoft Excel, you have the convenience of utilizing its built-in sorting functionality. This powerful feature allows you to arrange your data in ascending or descending order based on the values in a specified column or range of cells. When it comes to alphabetizing data for example sort by name, there are two primary methods at your disposal.
Method 1: Use Sort & Filter ribbon (Easy and quick)
- Select the column name that you want to alphabetize
- Click Sort & Filter in your home ribbon
- Choose Sort A to Z or Z to A

Method 2: Toggle on filter function (Flexible)
- Select the column name that you want to alphabetize
- Toggle on the filter with shortcut (Window: Ctrl + Shift + L / Mac: Command + Shift + F)
- Choose the drop down menu of the column name that you want to alphabetize
> choose ascending or descending sort - You can either stay with the filter for more operations or press filter shortcut again to disable the filter toggle and make the current view permanent.
